Introduction
Mr. Harmeet Singh is a young graduate and an avid tourist himself. He aspires to join tourism industry and hence wanted to explore tourist organizations in India. Let us help him by exploring “India tourism”
India Tourism as a nodal agency
India Tourism was formerly known as the Department of Tourism http://tourism.gov.in/. It functions under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism & Culture. The Ministry of Tourism functions as the nodal agency for the development and promotion of tourism in India. It plays a crucial role in coordinating and supplementing the work carried out by the State Tourism Development Corporations. It also helps in providing trained manpower resources. India Tourism encourages private investments and strengthens promotional and marketing efforts.

Need for India tourism
Tourism organizations are needed for following reasons:
- If tourism is to be successful in a country a consolidated effort of Government and Private Organizations is necessary.
- Organizations can coordinate with the various sectors of tourism industry to ensure that they work together as a team and get maximum profit.
- The tourist will get value for money leading to customer delight because of easy accessibility, adequate facilities and safety at the destination.
- Since different sectors of the industry are interdependent on each other, organizations help them in conducting business.
- Many of the vendors/operators are small scale operators and need an association to defend and protect their rights.
- As the tourist market is fragmented, organizations help them in reaching potential customers.
The function of India Tourism, both organizational and promotional is performed by the following seven divisions:

Functions of India tourism offices:
- Collection, compilation and dissemination of tourist information in India and abroad, and attending to enquiries of international tourists, tour operators and members of the travel industry such as airlines, steamship companies and hotels.
- Cooperation with international travel and tourist organizations at government and non-government levels.
- Development of tourist facilities of interest to international tourists.
- Publicity at home and abroad with the object of creating an overall awareness of the importance of tourism.
- Simplification of frontier formalities in respect of international tourists.
- Regulation of activities of the various segments of the travel trade such as hotels, youth hostels, travel agents, wildlife, guides etc. catering to tourist needs.

Activity
Many research scholars have complained to India tourism that Ajanta and Ellora caves, though full of beauty and potential, do not attract enough tourists every year. Foreign tourists visiting India do not give preference to Ajanta and Ellora caves though they visit Maharashtra. What additional steps would you suggest to increase number of tourist and enhance tourist satisfaction at Ajanta & Ellora caves?
