More than 50 vegetable crops from different families are grown in India. India is the second largest producer of vegetables. India ranks first in production of Cauliflower, ranks second in Onion and third in Cabbage. West Bengal, Orissa, U.P., Bihar and Maharashtra are the major vegetable growing states. Vegetables are important protective food stuff. They provide vitamins and minerals to our body and are very cheap source of digestive fibre. As the majority of Indian population is vegetarian, the demand for vegetables in domestic markets is very high. As the per capita consumption of vegetables is low in India, there is great scope for improving production and productivity of vegetable crops.
